Beech Mountain Resort

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Beech Mountain Resort is one of the highest-elevation mountain biking destinations in the eastern United States. Best known as a winter ski resort, Beech Mountain transforms into a lift-served bike park during the summer, offering riders cool mountain temperatures, scenic alpine views, and a diverse network of downhill trails.

The resort sits at an elevation of 5,506 feet (1,678 m) at the summit, with a base elevation of 4,675 feet (1,425 m) and an 830-foot (253 m) vertical rise. Beech Mountain Resort is also recognized as the highest ski area in Eastern America, giving the bike park a distinctive high-elevation Appalachian setting.

Trails for Every Skill Level

Beech Mountain's mountain biking terrain is designed for riders ranging from beginners to experienced downhill riders. The resort officially grades its terrain using four categories:

• Green Circle – Easier

• Blue Square – More Difficult

• Black Diamond – Most Difficult

• Double-Black Diamond – Extremely Difficult

The resort's mountain statistics list 17 total trails, including 3 easiest trails, 9 more difficult trails, 4 most difficult trails, and 1 freestyle terrain area.

Beginner riders can start with smoother and more approachable terrain designed to introduce them to lift-served mountain biking. The resort describes its beginner trails as having manageable features that allow newer riders to build confidence before progressing towards more technical terrain.

Intermediate Riding

Intermediate riders have access to a broad selection of trails combining machine-built features with natural Appalachian terrain. The trail network includes berms, technical corners, rocky sections, roots, and other features that allow riders to progressively develop their skills.

The current trail map includes named sections such as Green Mamba, Indigo, Copperhead, Burmese Python, Canebrake, Hellbender, Whistle Pig, and Black Bear, with several trails divided into upper and lower sections. Trail conditions and openings can change because of weather, maintenance, and construction, so riders are advised to check the current trail status before riding.

Advanced and Expert Terrain

Experienced riders can progress onto Beech Mountain's Black Diamond and Double-Black Diamond terrain, where steep slopes, rocky sections, tricky corners, and technical wooden features provide significantly more challenging riding.

Lift Access

The summit of Beech Mountain is exclusively accessible by chairlift for bike-park riders, providing efficient uphill access before each downhill run. Self-shuttling is not permitted, and there is no drop-off or parking available at the summit. A valid lift ticket is required to access the mountain biking trails.

This lift-served setup allows riders to maximise their downhill laps while minimising climbing, making Beech Mountain particularly well suited to gravity-oriented riding.

Mountain Bike Rentals and Lessons

Riders arriving without their own equipment can rent bikes and protective gear directly from the resort. The current rental fleet includes All Track Enduro bikes, All Track DH bikes, junior mountain bikes, and e-bikes. Rentals include a bike and protective gear, while lift tickets are purchased separately.

The resort also offers mountain bike lessons for riders who want to build confidence or improve their technique. Lessons are available for different experience levels and include rental equipment.

2026 Bike Season

For 2026, Beech Mountain Resort's summer operating season runs from May 22 through September 27. Mountain biking is part of the resort's summer activities, with lift operations varying by date during the season.
